From: Margo Corbett, the Savvy Patient Mentor & founder, The Savvy Patient School

December, 2008

Subject: Learn How To Use Your Personal Medical History Record To Obtain the Medical Care, You Need...and Deserve.

Dear Patient / Caregiver,

You may know me as the author of Lead Your Way to Better Healthcare and now the 2nd edition, The Savvy Patient's Toolkit. (Not only the most detailed and complete medical history records system available, but the how to be a patient education you never got in school).

But before becoming an author, I worked for many years as a Total Quality & Knowledge Management trainer and consultant in a biotech and then a Fortune 500 company. I taught and coached executives, all layers of management and workers on how to develop visions, develop new processes, improve existing processes and be successful in their work lives.

I've asked them the same the type of questions I'm about to ask you...

  • Do you desire to obtain the very best health care possible for yourself or a loved one?
  • Would you like to get much more out of your short 10 to 15 minute doctor appointments?
  • Could your doctor patient communication and relationships be improved?
  • Do you want to significantly decrease the chance you will experience a wrong diagnosis or other medical errors?
  • Would you like to have more confidence & peace of mind about the decisions you make regarding your health and medical care?
  • Would you like to decrease your health care costs?

If you don't think it's possible and / or if you answered yes to any of these questions, I'd like to challenge you to a new way to think about and manage your medical care...

Starting today…

I'd like to see you maximize your ability to achieve the best care possible for yourself or for a spouse, friend, child, or as a senior caregiver. Better medical care is attainable. Yet, most people never learned how to manage their care or had the self-empowerment tools that are the basis for successful medical care management.  Studies show that the smart patient - the empowered patient obtains better medical care and has better outcomes than the patient who is not engaged in his own or a loved one's care.

Of course, there are many medical history records on the market -- lists and lists of suggestions and advice that tell you what to do - But, I couldn't find one that gave me fingertip access to those tips and guidelines along with my own medical information at the point of need - doctor appointments, test procedures, emergencies, etc....

As a patient advocate or senior caregiver, your challenge is even greater. It's hard to remember the details of people in your care. You feel you are the only one who can accompany that person for medical care because you are the only one who has knows everything about his or her care / needs. Those days are over! Now with the Savvy Patient Health Record System you can share the responsibilities…

The Savvy Patient School

If you are looking for a new level of success and achievement in the quality of your medical care... I invite you to discover that The Savvy Patient School methods and training is your fastest, easiest and most reliable way to:

  1. Transition from the methods that used to work when seeking medical care to those required in today's health care environment. (What does it take to navigate the medical system? How do I need to communicate? Where do I start?).
  2. Shift the way you think about your role when you become a patient or caregiver. (The old way of thinking doesn't work anymore  -  you will learn the roles you and your providers need to play  -  changing the way you interact and empowering you in ways you never imagined)
  3.  Discover why it is so important to keep your own personal medical history records. (Better yet, the hard work has been done for you - the processes and forms are ready to use & you will know how to use them and do it with ease!).
  4.   Break through Resistance and Overcome Blocks to getting started. (You keep hearing about what you need to do and you know you need to do it. In this patient education, you'll discover how all the pieces fit together).
  5. Set up your personal Savvy Patient Health Record. (Finish school with your personal health record notebook set up and ready to use - You will have fingertip access to your detailed medical information and to the questions you need to ask in critical situations).
  6. Improve your ability to communicate effectively with all clinicians. (If you think you know how to tell your story when you seek care, chances are you haven't thought about it quite this way - but during class you will learn not only how to tell your story, but what questions to ask and when, and how to help your clinicians think! Studies show that 80% of the time clinicians reach a diagnosis in the first 15 - 20 seconds of your appointment and fail to consider other alternatives unless given a reason). Improving doctor / patient communication is key to successful medical care.
  7. Implement steps to more effective doctor appointments. (Have your clinicians in awe of your preparation, efficiency and ability to get the most out of your doctor appointments).
  8. Discover how you can prevent medical errors. (You may not even know how you contribute to them yourself).

Who is Margo Corbett?

Margo Corbett is uniquely qualified to teach you How To Be A Savvy Patient. All of her education, professional and personal experiences have blended together in her books and in the Savvy Patient School in preparation for this life mission - "Helping you become a savvy empowered patient".

Margo is the author of Lead Your Way to Better Healthcare and the secular 2nd edition The Savvy Patient's Toolkit.

She has appeared on radio and spoken to a variety of groups and at regional & national conferences throughout the US.

She has a BS in Medical Technology and Masters in Storytelling with extensive training in Total Quality Management, Knowledge Management and Systems Thinking.

Personal experiences include surviving cancer and three life-threatening medical errors. She has been a patient advocate for her husband since his crisis in 2003 - the day that he was told he might not life through the night because he was in kidney failure -- that inspired the first edition of her book Lead Your Way to Better Healthcare.

She continues as a patient advocate for her husband, friends and family. While doing so, all of the medical history forms in her books were created at the point of need and from a patient's perspective because she quickly realized people need more than a medical history record or forms to use; they need to know how to use the information compiled in them to obtain better medical care and prevent wrong diagnosis and other medical errors.

Recently, she has volunteered for CareSpark, a non-profit organization in NE Tennessee & SW Virginia. CareSpark is building one of the nation's premier Electronic Medical Record Systems to link and make patient records available at all times to all providers. She is also an observer / advisor to the Consumer Perspective Workgroup of the National Health Information Network (NHIN), which is building the system to link medical records nationally. She spoke at the ARC National Convention in Albuquerque, NM in November 2008.

Margo is married with seven children and nine grandchildren with another on the way.

What Doctors have to Say...

"All of us have experienced the fragmentation and depersonalization that characterize medicine in 21st century America.  This flawed system has hurt Margo Corbett more than once.  However, rather than curse the darkness, she has lit a bright candle.  Applying her business expertise in systems and procedures to her own bad experiences with medicine, she has developed a system to help the average person avoid medical errors and misdiagnosis, and instead get the best possible medical care.  I hope that all of my patients learn and use her system."

- Steven L. Brown, MD, PhD, cardiologist & associate professor internal medicine Texas Tech University & author of Navigating The Medical Maze

"Ms. Corbett has the wisdom and training in Total Quality Management (T.Q.M.) to write this valuable guide, I endorse that we all need to read it and follow it verbatim and literatim (word-for-word & letter-for-letter). Truly this text should be required reading for all of our medical students at our Colleges of Medicine and our nursing students at our Colleges of Nursing. Further, our patients will be expected to benefit if five copies are placed in any and all of our City and County Public Libraries moreover in the waiting room areas of the offices of our chosen allied healthcare providers."
 - Joshua Grossman, Col.(r), U.S. Army Medical Corp, M.D., F.A.C.P.

From Here to There

I never dreamt I'd work in industry, I never dreamt I'd write a book, I never dreamt I'd start a school, I never dreamt my book would be used as a textbook in a Nursing Curriculum (which it is!). But life's twists and turns have taken me on an exciting journey.

I've always been a continual learner. If I'm not learning something new, I'm bored. When new opportunities are either there for the taking or thrust on me, I usually take the challenge and go for it. After my third brush with death from the last medical error, I knew God wanted me alive for a reason. I firmly belief The Savvy Patient Toolkit & School are that reason.

The point is not to talk about me, but to let you know how passionate I am about what I am doing. An unknown writer doesn't make much money selling books unless they are fortunate enough to make "the right connection". I haven't done that YET. So far, I have spent money - more than my husband dreamt I would or wanted me to - to bring my message to people. That's how passionate I am about it!

The Power of Being A Savvy Patient

I realized how powerful my forms and the system I developed are when I prevented my husband from receiving an antibiotic that would have destroyed the rest of his kidney function. I also realized how powerful it is when I drove five hours to accompany my son and his family to my grandson's appointment to see a specialist after being on life support for 10 days, only to get there and find they had no information whatsoever about him. However, because I had transferred my grandson's hospital record to a Savvy Patient Health Record, the doctor had ever detail of his hospital stay in a format that enabled her to easily access his situation and proceed.

I love to teach and help people. I want to be able to reach people everywhere in a way that is convenient and cost effective for everyone. Therefore, I have taken my successful in-person school and converted it into a self-directed or do-at-your-own-time-and-pace format - so I can reach people like you.

The "Queen" of One-Pagers

When I was in industry, I became know as the "Queen" of One-Pagers, which means I have the ability to take a large body of information and condense it to a one-page format with the information arranged in boxes that show how the pieces of information relate to each other.

The forms in the Savvy Patient Health Record are created in this format. Medical history information is captured in a way that helps you learn more about your medical conditions and tie the pieces of your health story together for better control over your care and doctor / patient communication.

Through use of the medical history forms, you will become an empowered patient who is able to lead your health care team & coordinate your care in a way no one else can - not even your doctor.

I Will Personally Help You Gain the Ability to Take Charge of Your Medical Care & Obtain Better Care

During the years I worked in industry, I taught all levels of management Total Quality Management and then assisted them in applying what they learned, which lead to improved business success. Teaching in was very gratifying, but no nearly as gratifying as helping someone avoid unnecessary medical tests or save their own or a loved one's life by averting a wrong diagnosis or other medical errors.

I've combined 40 years of education, personal and professional experiences and the knowledge gained writing and rewriting the 2nd edition my book The Savvy Patient's Toolkit and turned it into a course that is exceptional.

First, I'll challenge the way we think about medical care and surface the beliefs that are holding us back...

Then, step-by-step, we'll piece together how to be transformed into a Savvy Patient who navigates the medical system with confidence and peace of mind. A Savvy Patient after all must be the Smart Patient + a Wise Patient + an Empowered Patient. I'll show you how!

You'll learn how to not only capture your medical history records on specific medical history forms, but how to use the information in them effectively. I'll give you the medical history forms plus additional tools and guidelines to be successful.

Guaranteed.

While that may sound like a bold statement, it's one I'm confident in making. Why? The system and techniques work. You simply have to put them to work.

And I'll show you how - when you join me in at The Savvy Patient School. Just think...

  • You don't have to pay for gas to get to class.
  • You can do it on YOUR schedule
  • You can be in the comfort of your home, in your PJ's and with your favorite cup of coffee!
If you ...
  • Have ever experienced a wrong diagnosis or other medical errors and want to do everything you can to prevent another - this school is for you.

  • Be able to ask better questions. Questions that help your health care provider think and consider alternatives.
  • Minimize the time it takes you to fill out medical history forms without forgetting vital information.
  • Be able to give providers complete and accurate information - tell a story that helps your doctor help you.
  • Recognize the importance of obtaining copies of all test results and how to use the information.
  • Increase the likelihood that you will get appropriate tests and decrease the number of tests and / or office visits because, both you and your provider have more and better information.
  • Save money - reduce health care costs by reducing duplications, number of appointments, and averting a costly wrong diagnosis and other medical errors.
  • Manage hospitalization more effectively and avert certain types of preventable hospital errors.
  • Recognize the importance of having or being a patient advocate or caregiver and how to do so.
  • Understand medication dangers and how to better manage medication at home and in the hospital.
  • Effectively research your medical conditions and options for treatment.

Plus much more that will have an immediate impact on your life!

The Critical Advantage This Training Gives You

This program is accessible...

There is only one other school similar to this one in the United States. To my knowledge, the curriculum is taught twice a year to the residents who live nearby. Consequently, it is not available to many people.

This program is available as a Self-Directed Audio / Internet-based program and In-Person offerings.

There are many Personal Health & Medical History Records springing up on the Internet, on CD's and in book format - This system is NOT JUST ANOTHER Personal Health Record or Medical History Record System - it is more than medical history forms that capture your medical information. You will receive FREE personal medical history software as an attendee.

The software contains >40 forms constructed to help you tie the pieces of your medical story together so you can help doctors and other health care providers help you.

Your Savvy Patient Health Record is set up to provide you with fingertip access to medical history information under any circumstance - be it an emergency or during an appointment - whether it is for yourself or a loved one for whom you are a caregiver or patient advocate.

As a participant, you are provided with the Critical Question Series - sets of questions that you place in your medical history record binder and have fingertip access to at the point of need.

Questions to Ask When:

  • A New Medication is Prescribed
  • You Are Told You Need to Have Surgery
  • You Receive a Diagnosis
  • A Medical Test or Procedure is Recommended
  • Medical Test Results are Outside the Normal Range

And MORE...

You are taught how to avert a wrong diagnosis and prevent many medical errors in and out of the hospital - you even learn how you create them yourself without knowing it!

Boost Your Confidence and Sleep Better at Night Knowing You are Making Better Decisions

If you feel intimidated by or don't trust your doctors and lack the confidence to interact as an equal partner, or if you feel inadequate to lead your health care team, you will never have the relationship you need to survive in today's medical environment.

"Margo Corbett has set the stage for a revolution in the way we see ourselves and our care. The paradigm shift she has created is the missing piece. While health care professionals are scrambling to tackle the problem, the system will remain broken until they are met as equal partners by the patients they serve. Margo eloquently makes the case for how we must embrace our care with responsibility and commitment, giving heart to all of us who desire to see a transformation in our relationship with ourselves, our stories, our bodies, and with those who are trained to facilitate and manage our care."

Richard Stone, storytelling consultant to health organizations & author of The Healing Art of Storytelling

The Savvy Patient School will give you the personal medical record software and other tools you need to make the transition.

What Students Have To Say

"Very, very informative & useful - encourages me to be in charge of my healthcare and gives me the confidence to "question" health care providers about tests, results, etc. The course answered my questions about procedures and steps to take to ensure I obtain better care."

Betty Widener

"The book is good but I needed a time set aside to apply the book - this class was perfect! Putting this notebook together as a group and with the homework did two things: 1) cemented the material in my mind 2) the notebook is done and waiting to be used."

Gayle Jacobs

"This class has been so helpful to me. Just knowing the questions to ask, forms to complete and to have so much of my medical information at my fingertips is so valuable. Many thanks to you, Margo.

Shirley Wilkes

"Great information - much needed - doctors should hear some of this."

Judith Johnson

"The course is very beneficial. I know the right questions to ask for the best care, make the most of my healthcare dollars, and prevent deadly/costly errors. It familiarized me with what I have a right to know and helps in selecting the doctor best able to care for me.

How the In-person School is Structured

How To Be A Savvy Patient is offered in a variety of formats depending on location, group preferences and needs. To discuss bringing the Savvy Patient School to your area or doing it LIVE via telphone and the Internet, contact me using the information on the "Contact Us" page (click on the "Contact Us" tab at the top of this page).

A Surprisingly Low Investment for Life Saving Patient Education

This is a one-of-a-kind experience. So, you have to make this decision based on the value to you.

  • What is it worth to you to obtain more timely diagnoses?
  • What is it worth to you to get an accurate diagnosis? Avoid a wrong diagnosis?
  • What is it worth to you to prevent a potential medical error?
  • What is it worth to you to save money on health care costs that greatly exceed the cost of this patient school?
  • Can you put a price on Confidence & Peace of Mind when it comes to your medical care?

Now I'm beginning to sound like the infomercials I dislike, but what else can I say. We all need to make the most of every moment of our short medical appointments.

We need to know everything every member of our health care team knows because the medical system is flawed, fragmented and depersonalized, as Dr. Brown says.

We need to be our own advocate or advocate for a loved one.

Why You Need A Patient Advocate at Your Appointments Even if You Are Healthy or Relatively Healthy...

  • Patients are being forced to bear more responsibility for their own care as aging baby boomers stress the medical system resulting in more extensive patient preparation prior to appointments and a need for better doctor / patient communication.
  • Studies show we remember only 50% of what we are told in a doctor appointment, thus it is imperative to take notes and interact effectively with the clinician at the same time - the advocate can take these notes on the Provider Consultation Form leaving you to put your full attention on the interaction.
  • During the appointment, it is often difficult to remember pertinent questions and information to tell the doctor / clinician - the advocate can act as a prompter by reading the notes the Provider Consultation Form.
  • If a patient receives a difficult diagnosis, such as cancer, and is unable to think clearly to ask the right questions much less remember the answers - the patient advocate can step in and help you ask these important questions by referring to the appropriate Critical Question Set and then take notes.
  • Patients often have difficult decisions to make about treatments, surgeries, etc. - the advocate can be a good sounding board, remember forgotten details and assist in thinking through decision because they have been involved in appointments and care.
  • Other reasons include helping prevent a wrong diagnosis or other medical errors, recognizing ageism in the elderly, and advocate for patients when they can't fight for themselves and more...

I planned to charge more, but due to the current economic situation I have drastically dropped my prices. Stress causes so many illnesses. I want peope to be able to learn how to get the medical care they need. This is a limited time offer. As with every other product or service in life, the price only goes up.

And, as Yogi Berra once said:

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it." This is your fork in the road.
